Someone's Gonna be Mad
The actual TV ratings number for our sport don't really ever get released very much and I've asked around from time to time about them. Just out of curiousity, I'd love to know if there is more and more eyeballs watching the sport because that's a great thing. I remember a year or so ago, I met a guy who worked on some outdoor races and also some NHL games. I asked him that very question and he told me "I don't think they want to let those numbers out because they're pretty small and would look pretty bad next to the traditional stick and ball sports." I heard this a few times from a few different people and honestly, that sucked. I wish they would show us the growth of our sport, no matter how small. It would be nice to know we're all sort of heading in the right direction.
Anyways, in a move that might make someone mad, SPEED TV released some ratings from 2012 races and the recent Atlanta race was up big-time over a year ago. Yeah, it is a small number (0.47- averaging 630,000 viewers.) but it's our number dammit! And it's up from 2011 so that's good also. Yeah so what if the Oscars got a 22.6, they didn't have Mookie Fever like we all did.
